Zara is an Ottawa based artist and graduate of the drawing and painting program at OCAD University. Her current body of large scale work explores life that comes from death - using references from mold and fungi as both literal and metaphorical translations. Her idea originally came from an article she read about a species of fungi that was killing trees. She recognized that in order for the fungi to grow and thrive, the trees had to die. This theme is seen in her recent painting series "Shedding", which depict mold and fungi covering, oozing and overtaking the body. She relates this to everyday scenarios like relationships, overcoming hardships and even death. In these difficult situations it is important to appreciate the beauty that comes from decay
